When Your House Is Not A Home was written by Roger Miller
In 1959 Little Jimmy Dickens released “That’s How It Is When My House Is Not A Home”, written by Roger Miller. “When Your House Is Not A Home” is the proper title. The copyright is 1959 by Tree Publishing, BMI.
The song is added to our educational section because it has been covered by so many different artists.
Here are the first two verses:
I walk up to my door and hate to turn the key
Emptiness is all that’s left inside for me
That’s how it is when the one you love is gone
That’s how it is when your house is not a home
I look around and see things marked with his and hers
Things like these just seem to make things that much worse
That’s how it is since I live my life alone
That’s how it is since my house is not a home
Roger Miller is such a talented singer, songwriter, and performer. Many people think Miller only had a few serious songs and many funny ones. “Dang Me” comes to mind. In truth Roger Miller was very talented.
“When Your House Is Not A Home” was recorded by Patsy Cline, Don Gibson, Little Jimmy Dickens, and George Jones back in the late fifties and early sixties. The song is also on Bobby Flores’ CD “Too Many Rivers” almost fifty years later.
Let’s listen to Don Gibson as he sings the song:
