I’m going to file this article in the “Odd and Weird” category, but it gives you some background on Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell. Both very talented, the two decided to form a group originally called “The Cherry Bombs”, later known as “The Notorious Cherry Bombs”.
Some call it a “what were they thinking” moment, while the name actually represented the group’s standing on the charts. If you look long enough and hard enough you’ll discover a country song that many people laugh about for the song’s words and honesty. The year was 2003.
Their self-titled album produced a minor hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts that year in “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long”. You can see the video here. That song was followed by “Let It Roll, Let It Ride” which failed to chart. In other words, it bombed.
After the release of their second single, The Notorious Cherry Bombs disbanded for the second time, and Crowell and Gill resumed their solo careers. As talented as the musicians were there was something wrong with the name “The Notorious Cherry Bombs”. It doesn’t sound country to me, but “It’s Hard To Kiss The Lips…” has a country sound and Vince Gill’s voice is easy to recognize.
The reason we suspect something was wrong is because although the group basically failed, they had a #1 song right in front of them and failed to see it. “Making Memories of Us”, which had previously been recorded by Tracy Byrd, would later become a Number One hit when Keith Urban released his own version in 2005.
Given the choice between our Odd And Weird category, or our Educational category, we go for Odd And Weird with this article about Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell as The Notorious Cherry Bombs.
