Steel Guitar player Don Helms will be missed

He played steel guitar for Hank Williams and was part of Hanks band. Long-time steel guitar player Don Helms passed away at the age of 81. Don Helms, who died of a heart attack on August 11, was born in 1927 in Alabama, and grew up listening to the sound of steel guitars on the weekly radio broadcast of the Grand Ole Opry.

When it came time to set the stage for lonesome country music the combination of Hank Williams voice and Don Helms steel guitar was unmatched. It is Don Helms’ signature steel guitar sound you hear on almost every one of Hank Williams’ hit songs, establishing Helms as an instrumental force. Don Helms recorded with 45 members of the Country Music Hall of Fame including Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Webb Pierce and Brenda Lee, and continued to perform until recently.

He will be missed.
