Remembering Mel Street and his hits
Mel Street was born in Grundy Virginia but did not become a coal miner like most of the community. His real name is King Malachi Street. Mel Street was born on October 21, 1933 and comitted suicide on his 45th birthday, October 21, 1978. Always a sad event, what makes this even more sad – if that is possible – is that Mel Street released a song that same day titled “Just Hangin’ On”.
You’ve heard Mel Street on Willies Place and many other country music stations. His hits include “Big Blue Diamond”, “Lovin’ On Back Streets”, “I Met a Friend of Yours Today”, “Borrowed Angel”, “If I Had a Cheatin’ Heart,” and “Smokey Mountain Memories”.
In 1973 Mel Street released an album titled “The Town Where You Live /
Walk Softly On the Bridges”. From that album “Walk Softly On the Bridges” went to #11 on the country charts. “The Town Where You Live” went to #38 on the country charts, and still receives airplay today, even though the song never went to #1.
Let’s listen to Mel Street singing “Big Blue Diamond” and his hit “Lovin’ On Back Streets” from the Hot Country Video library. You can search for all Mel Street songs in the video library. New videos are added every day. Chances are pretty good that if you heard a song on Willies Place or Hanks Place, and if there is a video, it will be in our video library. You can help us out and add videos too.
