Once a Day by Connie Smith sets 1964 record
The year was 1964 and Marty Robbins, Stonewall Jackson, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell, and Roger Miller all had #1 songs. Then a woman came along. Connie Smith released her debut song “Once A Day.”
Staying at #1 for eight weeks, “Once A Day” became the longest-running Billboard #1 song by a female country artist. With this song, Connie Smith became the first female country artist to top the charts with a debut single.
It didn’t hurt that Connie’s album cover was a beautiful photo of her. Connie Smith won three awards in 1965, for best new country artist, best female country vocal performance, and best country song.
“Once A Day” went to #1 on Novemeber 28th, 1964 and stayed there for eight weeks, carrying the song into 1965 at the #1 spot on the Billboard country chart.
Here is a video of Connie Smith from June 1965, singing “Once A Day”. You’ll see 23 year old Connie Smith performing “Once A Day” for the very first time in front of a camera:
