Country music outperforms all others for over 40 years
George Strait had 44 Number 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Counting all other music charts, Strait has amassed a total of 57 number 1 hits overall. The achievement for Strait, and country music, meant George Strait produced more hits than anyone in any other genre of music. He has been active from 1975 through the present, but his first charted release was in 1981.
George Strait has a style similar to Dan Roberts and Red Steagall, singing songs about ranching, rodeo, and Texas. In 1983, Strait made his first appearance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which became a mainstay throughout his career, making more than twenty appearances at the Rodeo, and playing to a total of more than one million fans.
Conway Twitty, with his string of 40 number 1 Billboard country hits, held that record for over two decades. Twitty performed as a rock singer before changing to country music in 1965. By 1968 he had his first number 1 country hit with “Next In Line”. Counting all other music charts, Conway Twitty had number 1 hits through 1990, giving him a total of 55 #1 hits.
George Strait and Conway Twitty, between them, had a record setting string of number 1 hits from 1968 through today – a total of 42 years.
A book documenting country music’s all-time greatest hits is titled “Heartaches By the Number: The 500 Greatest Country Music Singles”, a name reflecting the hit song “Heartaches By The Number” by Ray Price.
