Brady Texas Mayor James Stewart Tuesday signed a proclamation designating March, 2009 as Heart of Texas Country Music Association Month in the City of Brady.

The Proclamation noting that the organization grew out of the Hillbilly Hits radio program on KNEL and has grown over the 20 years to now include members around the world; hosts country music events in the area, built the Heart of Texas Country Music Museum and has brought vistors from across the country and from around the world to Brady.

Texas Governor Rick Perry also recognized the Heart of Texas Country Music Association. I quote:

As Governor of Texas, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone attending the 20th Anniversary Celebration for the Heart of Texas Country Music Association.

In so many ways, Texas culture is intertwined with great country music: from Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys to Willie Nelson; from Freddy Fender to George Strait.

Organizations like the Heart of Texas Country Music Association have helped keep the spirit of Texas music as alive and as vibrant as ever. But don’t take my word for it. Just take a look at the array of talented performers who will grace the stage in celebration of Heart of Texas’ second full decade of excellence.

The dedication of these individuals stands in testimony to the way Texas music continues to capture the heart and imagination of performers and fans from all across the state and around the world. Once this music takes hold of you, it won’t let go.

So enjoy the performances during this celebration, joining in a tradition that goes back generations, and indulging in a sound that truly represents the Best in Texas.

First Lady Anita Perry joins me in congratulating the Heart of Texas Country Music Association for 20 years, and in wishing everyone present a great time.

Sincerely,

Rick Perry
Governor
State of Texas

For those who may not be familiar with Curtis Potter he is a Country Music Association of Texas hall of famer and a student of the Ray Price era. Curtis Potter is a traditionalist and is helping to keep real country music alive and well today. In 1959, Curtis joined Country Music Hall of Fame member Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys as a bass player and front man. He had his own television show at the age of 16 and began working with country music pioneer Slim Willet.

Why haven’t you heard of Curtis or heard his great music? Maybe you are listening to the wrong station, but you can hear the tracks of “Them Old Honky Tonks” right here.

Justin Trevino selected the tracks for this CD. They are as follows:
1. Honky Tonks Are Calling Me Again – Songwriter: Ray Pennington (Billy Walker did this song in 1973)
2. I’ll Never Always Love You – Songwriter: Mel Holt
3. Holding On To Holding On – Songwriter: Ray Pennington
4. I Could Never Love You Now – Songwriter: Mel Holt
5. We’re Not Talking Anymore – Songwriter: Mel Holt
6. Every Time I Hear The Fiddle Play – Songwriter: Clifton Crofford
7. Far Away Feeling – Songwriter: Ray Pennington
8. I Can’t Keep My Mind Off Of You – Songwriter: Ray Pennington
9. Lost In The Shuffle – Songwriter: Bobby Braddock and Gidget Baird
10. Let Me Love In Peace – Songwriter: Doodle Owens and Gene Vowell
11. I’m Not Crazy Yet – Songwriter: Don Rollins
12. The Day You Left Me – Songwriter: Cindy Walker

This is a Heart of Texas Records CD

Although Curtis Potter is not in Wikipedia, and not on Facebook, his experience with traditional country music is unparalled. For a little of the back-story let’s look at Curtis Potter in Nashville.

Step One Records was an independent American record label established in February 1984 in Nashville, Tennessee. The label was founded by singer-songwriter and producer Ray Pennington with Curtis Potter, the former of whom had produced for Waylon Jennings. At the time of the label’s foundation, it was one of the few independent country music labels to have significant chart success, most notably in 1991, when the label released Clinton Gregory’s “(If It Weren’t for Country Music) I’d Go Crazy”, the only independently-released single on the Billboard country charts at the time of its release. The label lasted into the mid 1990s, having Top 40 success again in 1996 with Western Flyer’s “What Will You Do With M-E?”. Other artists signed to the label included The Geezinslaws, Ray Price, Faron Young, and Pennington himself.

I have two Curtis Potter CD’s, “Them Old Honky Tonks” and “Chicago Dancing Girls”, and both of them are great. Traditional country music at its finest, Curtis Potter’s music is out of this world.
